What you should know about Breast Augmentation!

History of breast implants:
Initially, breast implant shells were particularly “thin” to approximate a more natural feel, but their durability was limited.  Early implants were also traditionally under filled which could result in more frequent implant rupture.
Aggressive implant texturing was developed to maximize implant positioning, and address a painful hardening of the implant that sometimes occurred requiring revision surgery, Called Capsular Contracture. However, aggressive texturization has been associated with seroma and double capsule formation, highly undesirable adverse events.
A variety of implant fill materials were also developed, including saline implants. Saline was an alternative to silicone, but lacked the most natural feel, could leak, and could produce unsightly “wrinkling and rippling” on breasts.
General information of what is best for you!
When selecting the right breast implant for you, breast sizing is essential in achieving the desired breast aesthetic outcome.
Accurate measurement of the baseline breast size is a basic starting point in selecting the right implant volume or cup size that will best suit you.
Another important consideration for your satisfaction is an open dialog regarding the desired cleavage.
There may also be discussion about desired “upper breast fullness” or the way your beasts will look in certain clothing or swimwear.  Breast symmetry, as well as various nipple considerations may also be discussed.
While this information, intends to be a useful tool for you and your surgeon, you must understand that precise breast aesthetic decisions are finally determined only by your surgeon.  The surgeon is trained to not only understand the wishes of the patients, but to manage the particular biological body factors that will determine your specific breast aesthetic result.
3 different possibilities for incision
Inframammary Incision
* May accommodate most styles of implants.
* May result in a more rapid post-op recovery.
* Same incision may be used in the event of revision surgery.
* The scar may be visible when patient lays horizontally.
Periareolar Incision
* May result in a more rapid post-op recovery time.
* May accommodate explantation in the event of replacement surgery.
* May allow a mastopexy or breast lift in conjunction with breast augmentation.
* Scar may be visible as it is located near nipple.
* May affect breastfeeding.
* May lead to nipple hypersensitivity or loss of sensitivity.
Transaxillary Incision
* Does not produce a visible scar directly on the breast
* May associate with a lower risk of complications.
* Patient recovery time may be longer.
* Alternate incision site would be required in the event of revision surgery.
* May result in more difficult implant pocket creation.
2 different implants positions
Subglandular Placement Considerations
* Possibly less painful
* Possible rapid recovery time
* Possible improved control of the upper breast shape
* Implant may become more visually noticeable
* Potential for mammogram interference
* Recommended placement for texturized implants
Subpectoral Placement Considerations
* Implant may be less noticeable and less palpable
* Possible lower potential for mammogram interference
* May result in noticeable implant movement in thin skin patients
* Surgery may become more complicated
* Non recommended placement for texturized implants because of risks of seromas by abrasion
* Better for larger implants
Basics about the Surgery
       Breast augmentation is a very common procedure which may have a high degree of patient satisfaction, but like all surgeries, you should always discuss the potential risks with your surgeon.
       Depending on your specific type of procedure, breast augmentation may typically require one to two hours for completion.
       Usually, breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure, which means that the patient returns home the same day of the surgery.
       Surgeons often use general anesthesia during surgery, but your surgeon may talk with you about conscious sedation.
       Concerning the post-operative period, the recovery process depends on the particular patient profile, and other variable factors. During the first 48 hours, you might have an elevated temperature and swelling that will decrease over time.
       Post Op General advice:
                * Sleep or rest with your head slightly elevated, avoiding lateral positions. Keep your arms close to your body, and avoid lifting weights until instructed by your surgeon.
                * Do not drive during the first 2 days, or exercise until approved by your surgeon.
                * Do not expose your breasts directly to the sun until approved by your surgeon.
                * Gently massage your breast a circular way after 48 hours.
                * Healing cream may be recommended by your surgeon.
